How do I know what type of file I need?

This will vary, depending on the machine you use and how you plan to use the images. Let’s break it down:

Cricut Expression 1 and Expression 2 machines
The Expression series works primarily through physical cartridges that connect to the machine, as well as through an online portal called the Cricut Craft Room. Please note that Craft Room can only use .ccr file types, to which Cricut and Provo Craft have exclusive distribution rights. With that in mind, you cannot use any of the files sold here at SVG Salon with Craft Room.
However, Expression machines can be connected to a program called Sure Cuts A Lot, which can use SVG files, which we offer in all of our listings. If you have this program, make sure you have verified that the version you have works with your machine before purchasing any files. Currently only versions 1 and 2 will transfer files to an expression machine.

Cricut Explore, Explore One, and Explore Air Machines
The Explore series accepts both physical cartridges and digital files through the Cricut Design Space. All of our listings here at SVG Salon are compatible with Design Space, using the SVG file. Visit our how-to section for tips on using SVG files with Design Space.

Silhouette Cameo, Curio and Portrait machines
The Silhouette Cameo, Curio and Portrait machines use Silhouette Studio software, which is divided into two editions: Basic and Designer.

Silhouette Studio Basic Edition
This software is a free download that comes with your machine. If you are using the Basic Edition of Studio, use the DXF file listed here. Note that these files will take longer to cut on your machine and can sometimes result in a slightly less “clean” cut than SVG files. This is due to the composition of the file type itself and is not a reflection of the quality of the design. Also, DXF files will appear in your software only as lines, without any color fill. They are ready to cut, however if you want to see the colors on the screen before cutting you will need to fill them in manually.

Silhouette Studio Designer Edition and Business Edition
This is a paid upgrade to the basic software that came with your machine. Here at SVG Salon, we highly recommend purchasing this update as it allows you to use the SVG files included in the listings we offer. You will find that using an SVG results in cleaner, faster, and visually manageable cuts, as each layer is loaded in full color.
